We are a block from the safe zone. This should drop us off there; all we have to do is cross this street.
“Easy. Careful around this corner.” I whisper, feeling my nerves begin to relax and tensing all the more at the same time. We made it. Nothing to fear. I look at the map again just to be sure. Yes. E St. to G St. between 1st St. and New Jersey Ave.
We’re on 1st now. And D. Shoot. One block south from where we are supposed to be. Where we need to be.
I hurriedly tell my team and start moving the right direction.
Runners. To the left.
“Move, move! Run!”
We sprint to the intersection with a second or two left for us to cross. We make it and revel in the comfort these few blocks provide us, not thinking about all the people in this city tonight who are trying to stop us. We check in and assess the situation, our options, potential strategies. We have to be careful. They are everywhere, just waiting for us to make a move.
After a false start that almost costs Brittnie her blue ribbon, and her phone, we decide it is time. We head towards the Capitol, the exact opposite direction of where we are heading, in hopes of facing less opposition. Things are fairly clear. Just a few scares, but cars and a hotel lobby provide ample cover. We swing up towards Union Station, splitting off into two dyads. Walking through the station we make a game time decision to take the metro north. We pick up the pace when we pass a group of chasers exiting the bathroom.
Brittnie pushes open the doors to the metro station and I breathe a little easier.
