I’ve been quite spoiled with getting seats on the metro commutes to and from work. Yesterday was no such day. I was standing with the masses and people watching while listening to an audiobook.
One fella standing near the first set of seats facing the back of the car had a backpack on. A lady sitting on the outside of the first set of seats was reading a book. She tapped him to tell him his backpack was in her space. He mumbled about not knowing what else he could do about it but obligingly took it off and found a spot on the ground for it.
I was just thinking about how she has a seat and is giving this dude who I’m sure would love a seat a hard time because he is interfering with her reading time. While he and tons more of us are trying to maintain contact with any stabilizing piece of the train as we move along and get packed in even more.
I logged that memory as a reminder to me when I have a seat to be grateful and try to be more understanding of the standers.
